The Pakrashi Premium Mini offers particularly fine quality significantly less expensive than the comparable Paloma Companion. The 27 keys from f to g range over 2 1/4 octaves and thus cover the typical range of common mantras and kirtans. High-quality double reeds ensure good response and a warm, full sound. The silky-matt teak surfaces please eyes and hands alike. Precise workmanship ensures good fluency of the keyboard and long-term tightness of the air chambers. However, the Pakrashi Premium Mini has less air volume than normal sized harmoniums. Therefore, it needs more more action of the bellows when playing chords.

Manufacturer / Supplier

Pakrashi & Co. is a harmonium maker from Calcutta with a rich heritage. The company was founded in 1922 by the brothers Sudhir Chandra Pakrashi and Hem Chandra Pakrashi. In 1978 Sudhir's son Suphal Pakrashi took over the management. In the meantime Sudhir's grandson Suvojit Pakrashi is the third generation of the family to run the business. Pakrashi is known for high quality and groundbreaking innovations. Among other things, Pakrashi invented moveable keyboards (scale-changers) and folding mechanisms for harmoniums. The most recent development is the use of plastic instead of wood for the keys' sticks. This allows the production of exactly fitting sticks for all keys. They do not warp due to climatic fluctuations or aging. India Instruments already had Pakrashi Harmoniums in their assortment temporarily in the 1990s. After a longer break, we are offering Pakrashi harmoniums again since 2020.

Tuning

In India, our harmoniums are tuned in equal temperament to Western standard pitch with a = 440 hertz. However, due to lower average air temperatures, they often sound slightly higher at a = 441 to 442 hertz in Europe. The difference is so small, that even trained ears do not necessarily notice it. Nevertheless the difference may create problems in studio productions or when playing together with instruments with a tuning that can not easily be adjusted. Therefore we offer individual manual tuning to a = 440 hertz (or any other reference pitch close to that) with a surcharge on request. We can also supply custom-made harmoniums with considerably different tunings (e.g. a = 432 hertz). Please contact us if you're interested in that.
