Traditionally tablas from Calcutta were distinctively different from those from other regions. The shell of the Calcutta tablas had a more rounded base and the strap was mounted clockwise. The Calcutta heads were considerably thiner than in the rest of India. Their durability suffered from that, but the bell-like clarity and sustain of their tone was unmatched.

Our excellent Calcutta heads are made by Narayan Badya Bhandar, one of India's best tabla makers. His tabla heads are famous for their clear, bell-like tone.

Size

Skin InfoTabla heads are wearing parts - they need to be replaced from time to time. New tabla heads sound best when they fit as exactly as possible to the tabla body. When you order a new tabla head please let us know the required diameter in centimeters and millimeters. When you have already removed the old head you can measure from one outer rim of the tabla body to the other. Otherwise please measure from the inner rim of the gajara (or outer rim of the chat) to the opposite inner rim of the gajara (or outer rim of the chat) - see diagram.

We keep tabla heads any size between 5 and 6 inches (12.7 to 15.2 cm) and baya heads any size between 8 ½ and 9 ½ inches (21.6 to 24.2 cm) in stock. Smaller and bigger sizes are often available as well or can be ordered on request.

We guarantee complete satisfaction with our heads. As the quality of a head can only be assessed after being mounted, you can return and exchange a head after it has been tried out if you are not satisfied.

If you can not mount a new head yourself you can send your instrument to us for mounting – please check our repairs page for details.
