Tuning blocks (gattas) under the straps are indispensable for adjusting the basic tension of tabla and baya heads so perfectly that they can be tuned precisely to the desired pitch. Traditionally they are made of turned hardwood.

Tabla gattas are rather thick. They vary in wood colour, varnish and ornamentation. The image just gives an example.

Bayas do not have to have gattas, but they are useful tools for fine adjustments. They are relatively thin and help keeping an even tension as well as compensating changes in temperature and humidity.

Gattas are available in sets of eight for one instrument or as single pieces.
