As with the sarod, the strings run over a smooth fretless metal finger-board, allowing smooth melodic sliding movements and flexible intonation. The wooden body is covered with goatskin. As for the pitch of the playing strings, the same intervals used for the sarod apply. Since the dotar is noticeably smaller, the pitch has to be raised significantly

Features

Four melody strings, additional drone string on some instruments, wooden body and neck with brown polished varnish, goatskin top, metal fingerboard, simple carving decoration on body and / or pegbox, string holder made of brass.

General Info

The North Indian dotara is not to be confused with the Bengali dotar. The latter is a more complicated melody instrument with usually four strings and reminds of a little sarod in terms of construction and playing technique.
