This rare duet of equal vocal and instrumental performances by two of the top most ranking artists from India was altogether far more rewarding because this was a long standing desire by Amjad Ali Khan to record an album capturing the essence of Thumri singing. Thumris are light classical songs with either a romantic or devotional nature and although the project was conceived in 1997 it did not come to fruition until 2004. To cement the musical bond between Amjad and Girija, Girija Devi tied a Rakhee (sacred thread) to Amjad's wrist, in recognition of the Indian tradition whereby a sister ties a sacred thread to her brother's wrist.

Amjad Ali Khan (* 1945), youngest son of Gwalior court musician Hafiz Ali Khan, was born into a musical family and has performed internationally since the 1960s. He was awarded India's second highest civilian honor, the Padma Vibhushan, in 2001.

Girija Devi (* 1929) is a renowned singer of the Banaras gharana. She performs classical and light classical music and has helped elevate the profile of thumri. She has received the Padma Shri in 1972, Padma Bhushan in 1989, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1977 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 2010.
