Sarangg Kirtan Classic

The Sarangg Kirtan Classic is a good choice for beginners and kirtan singers who appreciate fine quality. Its main features are equivalent to our Tirupati Kirtan Classic and the 23 B from Bina, but the quality of materials and workmanship is a bit higher.

Thanks to Krishna Das or Jai Uttal, the design with fold-down bellows, integrated case, double reeds and simple stick keys is a classic in the western kirtan scene. Its simplicity makes it both inexpensive and robust. Double reeds, octave coupler and four drone notes provide a full, brilliant sound. The folding mechanism makes it so compact that you can easily carry it with just one hand.

Pine wood is the first choice for harmoniums around Delhi and in North Western India. It is much softer than teak wood, which is more common in Mumbai and Calcutta. Therefore pinewood harmoniums often get little dents or scratches during manufacturing, storage or transit to Europe. Such marks are a natural property of the wood and can not be seen as flaws or defects.

Manufacturer / Supplier

Sarangg is the brand of harmonium maker Esrajya International LLP in Delhi, who specialises in high quality harmoniums in Delhi style. The grandfather of Mayank Kumar, the current boss, founded the company in 1966, after having trained for 10 years with the renowned harmonium maker Ratiram. For decades Esrajya International has worked exclusively as a supplier for various dealers. Since 2020 Esrajya International is offering harmoniums under its own brand name Sarangg through India Instruments. Sarangg harmoniums are marked by a particularly fine quality of materials and workmanship and thus stand out from similarly constructed models of other manufacturers.

Tuning

In India, our harmoniums are tuned in equal temperament to Western standard pitch with a = 440 hertz. However, due to lower average air temperatures, they often sound slightly higher at a = 441 to 442 hertz in Europe. The difference is so small, that even trained ears do not necessarily notice it. Nevertheless the difference may create problems in studio productions or when playing together with instruments with a tuning that can not easily be adjusted.
Therefore we offer individual manual tuning to a = 440 hertz (or any other reference pitch close to that) on request without extra cost. We can also supply custom-made harmoniums with considerably different tunings (e.g. a = 432 hertz). Please contact us if you're interested in that.
