Like all shrutiboxes, the Monoj Kumar Sardar double is very reliable and extremely easy to handle. The range stretches over two octaves from G2 to G4. Thus is becomes possible, e.g. when playing individual notes or entire chords of the basic octave starting from G2, to play an octave, fifths and fourths from the higher octave simultaneously, simulating the basic principles of the harmonic series in this way. Any other imaginable combination of the 26 available chromatic notes can be played as well, of course.

Shrutiboxes are tuned to a fixed reference pitch, which can only be changed with significant effort. They can only be played together with instruments tuned to the same pitch. We offer Standard Tuning or 432 Hertz. Please choose what you prefer.
* The international concert pitch of 440 Hertz is the worldwide standard. This tuning is the most versatile and allows you to play with most musicians and instruments from all over the world.
* The lower tuning to 432 hertz is said to be relaxing and healing. It is popular in some spiritual circles, but cannot be used together with instruments tuned to standard pitch.
* Detailed information on tuning here.

Needs firm holding or wide foot plates when played with Bowring foot pedal. Suitable foot plates are available from India Instruments on request.

Manufacturer / Supplier

MONOJ KUMAR SARDAR & BROTHERS is a third generation manufactory-like instrument making and trading business in the old city of Kolkata. The four namesake brothers are all skilled instrument makers, each specialising in different instruments. At Monoj Kumar Sardar, you can get almost everything that is made in India - partly from their own production, partly from suppliers. We have been working with Monoj Kumar Sardar since India Instruments was founded in 1994.

Tuning

The 26 chromatic notes are arranged in two rows on top of one another. The top row features the low octave from G2 to G3 and the bottom row the octave from G3 to G4. They correspond to the bass and male registers of the harmonium.

In India, this shrutibox model is tuned in equal temperament to Western standard pitch with a = 440 hertz. However, due to lower average air temperatures, it may sound slightly higher at a = 441 to 442 hertz in Europe. The difference is so small, that even trained ears do not necessarily notice it. Nevertheless the difference may create problems in studio productions or when playing together with instruments with a tuning that can not easily be adjusted. Therefore we offer manual tuning to a = 440 hertz (or any other reference pitch close to that) on request.
