The shrutibox MKS / MM medium C combines the advantages of bigger and smaller shrutiboxes into an interesting hybrid. It is considerably lighter than MKS / MM large shrutiboxes, making it a rather pleasant instrument to carry. At the same time it has noticeably bigger bellows than small MKS and Paloma shrutiboxes, which facilitates a fairly constant sound of chords. The medium C is the only MKS / MM shrutibox with side parts made of solid wood instead of laminated wood and polished brass fittings, giving it an especially attractive appearance.

Can be played with Bowring foot pedal.

Manufacturer / Supplier

MONOJ KUMAR SARDAR & BROTHERS is a relatively large-scale manufacturer in the heart of Calcutta looking back on a rich tradition of three generations. It is run by four brothers, all of them trained craftsmen specialising in different aspects of instrument making. They mainly make sitars, tanpuras, esrajs, dilrubas, harmoniums and shrutiboxes. But the eldest brother and manager Monoj Kumar will get you every other instrument that is manufactured in India as well. Due to our long-term co-operation with Monoj Kumar Sardar since 1994, we receive instruments with a high quality level in terms of sound, workmanship and materials. Today Monoj Kumar Sardar's quality can well compete with other renowned brands like Hemen and Hiren Roy for string instruments or Pakrashi, Paul and Bina for harmoniums.

Tuning

This shrutibox model has 13 chromatic notes from c to c' (C3 to C4 in scientific terms). Each of the twelve halftones occurs at least once in this range. To achieve a full sound, an additional fifth or fourth up or down can be played together with each note, offering multiple possibilities of tonics and harmonies.

In India, this shrutibox model is tuned in equal temperament to Western standard pitch with a = 440 hertz. However, due to lower average air temperatures, it may sound slightly higher at a = 441 to 442 hertz in Europe. The difference is so small, that even trained ears do not necessarily notice it. Nevertheless the difference may create problems in studio productions or when playing together with instruments with a tuning that can not easily be adjusted. Therefore we offer manual tuning to a = 440 hertz (or any other reference pitch close to that) on request. We can also supply custom-made shrutiboxes with considerably different tunings (e.g. a = 432 hertz) and ranges. Please contact us if you're interested in that.
