Hemen & Co. was known in the second half of the 20th century for its excellent sarods and high-quality sitars and tanpuras. For a long time, Hemen & Co. was the official supplier to the renowned Ali Akbar Colleges of Music in San Rafael, California, and Basel, Switzerland. Hemen Chandra Sen founded the company in Calcutta in 1946 and ran it until his death in early 2010. In 2003, he received the Hafiz Ali Khan Award from the then Indian Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee for his services.
