Shanti Badya Bhandar offers a similarly high professional quality as the established traditional workshop Narayan Badya Bhandar - but at a significantly lower price. The goatskins and the shyais are made with the utmost care. They are the soul of the tabla and ensure a particularly clear and bright sound - typical of professional tablas from Kolkata. The mahogany wood of the body has both a high density and good vibrational properties, thus providing a perfect combination of stability and excellent sound.

The traditionally often used Indian rosewood Shisham may only be traded under certain conditions since 2017 due to international species protection agreements. We therefore no longer sell shisham tablas.

SHANTI BADYA BHANDAR is a young tabla brand from Kolkata. Its founder Kuber Das learnt tabla making from Gyan Das. Gyan Das was also the teacher of Shyamal Das, head of the renowned workshop Narayan Badya Bhandar. Kuber worked for Narayan Badya Bhandar for several years and during that time also learnt how to build excellent khols from Shyamal's father. Today, Kuber Das works in his own workshop where he develops his own ideas on the art of tabla making. One of his innovations is the use of steel instead of copper for the body of the bayan. This makes his bayans cheaper and more robust without compromising on sound quality. Shanti Badya Bhandar is a partner of India Instruments since 2024.
Our Shanti Badya Bhandar Premium Tablas have a diameter of around 5 1/2 inches. This medium diameter fits well for all hand sizes. They are well suited for tuning up to C or C#, but can also be played on lower notes. We can also supply other sizes / tunings as customised products on request.
